Gary Carter

My journey into fishing began at the tender age of five. Forbidden from venturing out alone—unable to swim—I devised a clever workaround, discreetly lowering my tackle from my bedroom window and retrieving it outside. Nothing could keep me from the water. Those early days, float fishing for tench, ignited a passion that would shape the course of my life.

At twelve, I encountered carp for the first time, fishing with nothing more than cat food and without the sophistication of hair rigs. By the early 1980s, I had discovered Layer Pit, where every bite sent a thrill through me, leaving me trembling with anticipation. It was during this time that my fascination with bait-making truly took hold. I scoured shops in search of the next groundbreaking ingredient, even reaching out to flavor companies in pursuit of the ultimate carp bait.

By the late ’80s, I had the privilege of meeting Gary Bayes, with whom I worked closely with for many years. I was honored to be the very first tester of a now-legendary bait—an experience that deepened my appreciation for the art and science of bait development.

Fifteen years ago, I crossed paths with Keith, whose unwavering passion for bait was immediately evident. We remained in touch, and over the years, he entrusted me with various creations to test. One, however, shone like a beacon—The Riddler.
